Varsity letter standards
There are three ways to earn a varsity letter in track and field. Hitting the standard in your event is one of them.
How the standard is set
Each year's standard is built from the seventh-place finish at the EBAL Championships — one place out of scoring. We average the last three years of seventh-place marks, then blend that average with the current EBAL qualifying standard, weighted toward the three-year average.
The three-year average keeps the number from swinging on one unusual meet. Anchoring to seventh place means the bar reflects what it actually takes to be competitive in this league, rather than a number a coach picked.
One consequence worth understanding: the standard moves with the league. In a year when EBAL gets faster, the standard gets harder even if you improved as much as anyone. That is intentional. The letter measures varsity-calibre performance in this league, in this era.
